Cremaster Cycle Trailer

Throughout most of this week's videos, there seems to be a theme of discomfort--whether it be visually, audibly, or both. The trailer to the Cremaster Cycle video alone was enough to make me feel both curious and uneasy at the same time; watching the full video might just push someone over the edge of a psychotic  break. As I watched the video, I could not be entirely sure of anything that was going on; I just recall several strange mental images of things that looked like something out of a fever dream--such as mutated people or animal/human hybrids, someone on an operating table with a bloody mouth, and murder among several other indecipherable acts taking place. The quality of the video was pretty blurry--which may be due to how old it is or the video not being uploaded as the original version; but regardless of whether it was on purpose or not, it added to the discomfort in a way. As the viewer, I was not only forced to watch the strange things taking place but had to work to focus my eyes on what exactly I was witnessing--which leaves part of the content up to my own imagination and interpretation. The music being played over the video also induces an uneasy feeling, and it intensifies as the video progresses. Honestly, the video trailer felt more like a challenge to see how much it would take to steer the audience away from watching the film; I would believe discomfort to be the ultimate goal--possibly through the theme of miscellaneous subconscious fears.

  1. I agree, I watched the video as well and got a sense of discomfort. I could grasp the message that the artist was trying to convey or if there is any message at all. We would maybe have to watch the full movie to understand.

  2. The video was very unsettling at times yes, and many of the appearances of some of the people in it gave me either anxiety or confusion as I tried to place whatever the setting was to the characters. I am often feeling somewhat overwhelmed by this video, and others like it, in that I feel things are put through a filter of pure chaotic energy only decipherable by some other worldly being.
