Week_7_Response_Matt_Talley
For this week's response I watched "The Machinist's Lament". I found this video to be quite odd. It combines various images, ranging from dancers in costumes dancing to computer-generated scenes with pipes or masks. The voice over is a woman describing various parts and aspects of a machine. The theme of the machine is kept through the video, but aside from that, I'm not really sure what the artist was getting at. The video has a randomness to it not generally found in the mechanical world.

I had the same analysis of the video, finding it quite odd. You seem to get a grasp of the meaning of the video as the subject focuses on mechanical and geometric subjects.
ReplyDeleteI think the video is really odd too. The best guess I could think of was that it had something to do with machinery as well.
ReplyDeleteReading the description below the video, it talked a lot about the fantasies of reigniting an industrial age. One of the exact quotes from the description is: "In a series of paintings on paper and the video Machinist's Lament, Jen Liu proposes a series of masks designed for a future in which industrial production has been successfully brought back to the West." I think this helps give a better idea of what the video is actually depicting in it's mechanical and industrial imagery.
