 Jacolby Satterwhite

This artist created multimedia works involving sculpture, dance, music, digital art, and much more. He is very visionary with his work and doesn't confine himself to any sort of standards with his art, pushing the boundaries and exploring new territory in the work he creates. Something that he said in the Art 21 video that stood out to me was that looking back at our older works and performances, we often embarrass ourselves and become very critical of ourselves.

He learned how to embrace this embarrassment and did performances that would deliberately draw attention from the public, choosing to focus on those weird looks and reactions he got from people, and turning that back into the art; their discomfort and uneasiness with his performances were exactly what he was looking for in order to not care so much about those feelings of embarrassment artists often get from looking at their own work.

Another connection I had with this artist was his inspiration from the Final Fantasy games when he was younger. I played these games as a kid too, and the fantasy worlds and mystical elements that those games brought to life definitely sparked my creativity and interest in art and music. The progression and combination of old and modern worlds colliding within the spaces of the video games was really cool to watch as you played through them. I could definitely see influences from those games in his work, with mystical and fantastical themes throughout his work.

Satterwhite also put a lot of time and thought into how he would display and present his work. Live performances of dance and music, huge sets with depth and both large and small elements to look at. He really wanted to immerse the viewer in the experience with his art.
