This week, I chose to write about The Machinist’s Lament.
Technically, this video is a collage video of different media. From 0:00 to 6:00, the video is film-style with a human subject. Then, the artist moves on to different techniques. For example, we see two-dimensional "cut and paste" collages, where the artist has manipulated images to create her video. Later, we see 3D modeled animation as well.
In this work, the artist is focusing on women. I believe that this work is a commentary on women's contribution to industrial society. I think this is likely a feminist work that describes both the advancements of society through the hands of women, yet also how these industries can take advantage of their workers. I think the audio plays a specific part in setting the tone for this work. In the video description, the artist states that the voiceover includes "Industrial supply catalogs, OSHA safety manuals, Monique Wittig’s Les Guerilleres, and Adorno’s Minima Moralia." I think it's really interesting to incorporate the technical jargon of things such as supply catalogs and safety manuals into art.

I agree that this work focuses on the women's contribution to the industrial society. The creativeness of having multiple types of media in this one work made it more meaningful for what its going for.
ReplyDeleteThis does feel like a commentary on women and the industrial society. Between the feminine narrator, dancers, and visuals, it does cement that this is a commentary coming a female perspective.
