Week 4_Response_Evan Hoyt

 For my video I chose “the Meaning of Style” by Phil Collins. This video was very short and simple in its style, with a wide shot of all the characters at the start, and variety of panning shots, giving you an idea of the space that the characters are in. But most of the focus is on one character: the boy wearing headphones, who has butterflies sitting on him. I think while the butterflies are physically there in the video, they are showing that even though he looks almost exactly like everyone else in the room, he stands out, he has style. Style isn’t a concrete thing, style is something that draws your eye to someone. Style is confidence, wonder, imagination, and so many more abstract things. I think the music and sounds that Collins picked to go with the video also went along with this idea as well. The ethereal and mystical music, with the periodic bell sound as the video focuses on this central character covered in butterflies clearly shows that something is different about him. This video was short, but illustrated an abstract concept, when it might be difficult otherwise to answer the question, “what is style?” in one minute and nineteen seconds.
