Week 2 Video_Evan Hoyt
Francis Alys, Zapatos Magneticos (1994)
This video has a very simple concept. It depicts a man wearing a pair of magnetic shoes as he walks around every day, collecting the random scraps of metal he stumbles upon in the streets. In the initial shot, you can see nails, staples, and other random bits of metal and dirt that has been caked on. The video consists of several different shots: wide, pan, zoom, and travelling shots are all used in the overall composition. You can hear someone, I presume to be the man wearing the shoes, whistling as he walks throughout his environment in the video. I think that the purpose and the message behind the video is to show that there are many little things that we would never notice if we didn't know how to look for them. Everyone else walking, driving, etc. around him is simply going about their every day life, not even realizing how many little things and bits they are walking over on a regular basis. He has simply devised a way to collect these things and turn it into a piece of art.
