This week, I chose Matryoshka by Raven Kwok.
The specific reason I chose this video was because of my girlfriend. She is a Computer Science major and instantly recognized the programming language as Java. It was really exciting to be able to see both of our interests—art and coding—combined into one comprehensive piece.
In this work, Kwok codes a program that tracks his face to create an interactive sort of new media video. This specific video has a subject matter: himself. Therefore, this work is a self-portrait, in a way. The video starts as Kwok test runs his code and it opens a small window that displays a video of his face. Every time Kwok opens his mouth, another window seemingly comes out from his mouth, creating a sort of visual narrative. I would like to think that the message behind this video is the fact that something so daunting and serious, such as coding, has the ability to be artistic, approachable, and fun.
