The above image is my original depiction of what I thought to be a representation of sound art. When I thought of sound art, I imagined shapes, colors, and movement; so I drew as much as I could think of within the timeframe given--though I did not have any color with me at the time.

I recorded some sounds, but I did not have enough at the time to truly begin creating something that I was happy with. During class, I worked with the sounds that I had to experiment with the way sounds could be arranged to create sound art.

I recorded some more sounds while I was at work. I wasn't really sure what would be the best way to combine them because they kept sounding like a bunch of random noise. I thought I would try to go the musical route with it and combine them together to create a sort of symphony of sounds, but I didn't really like the way that turned out either; I just don't think I am much of a musical person. I think I might do away with the idea of creating music with my sounds and go a completely different direction with it. I plan to record more sounds--possibly in nature, and combine them together to produce a sound art video that takes the listener to a different setting.

Since deciding to use sounds of nature in my project, it has been going a lot more smoothly. I recorded a lot of sounds outside and put them together in a way that puts the listener in the setting of a park on a rainy day; though none of the sounds I recorded are actually of falling rain, the listener would not be able to tell any different. Since arranging these sounds together, I added sound effects and adjusted the volume of different clips so that they blended together nicely; and I have been working on my visuals for the project. To make an abstract visual, I decided to use legacy titles to cover the images in the video with a black screen. I overlaid two titles--one more transparent and the other opaque; and in between and on top of these titles, I used shapes to portray the sounds that were occurring. In some areas, I experimented with masking so that just a little of my actual video content could shine through, but I didn't want it to show too much of what was actually happening because some of my sounds are not what they may be interpreted as if you were to see them. I am going to add a few more moving pieces before I am completely finished.

11/9/21 - Finished
For my project, I went to the park on a sunny day and recorded sounds in nature. I made several different video clips consisting of sounds of turtles plopping in water, footsteps on a bridge and on concrete, leaves, wind, cars passing by, and a water fountain. In recording these sounds, however, my goal was not to put the viewer in the setting of a sunny park; instead, I wanted the viewer to hear these sounds and imagine a rainy day. When all of the sounds are combined together, they blend smoothly to put the viewer outside where they can hear cars and wind blowing by. The more you listen, the more the wind picks up and you can hear leaves blowing and what sounds like thunder. Closer towards the end is when the "rain begins to fall" and the viewer can imagine walking to their car to get out of the rain; and at the very end, a car door opens and shuts--causing the rain to get quieter. For my visuals, I used geometric shapes and masking for representation of certain events. The rectangles in the beginning of the video, for example, are to represent cars passing by; and the flashing white is to represent lightening in the sky. As the video progresses and the "storm" begins to roll in, the visuals become less because the storm is bringing a halt to all other activity occurring outside.
